Wax resist African-patterned textiles by Vlisco, a Dutch company founded in 1846, the fabric of choice for West African fashionistas
Partially paralyzed, bicultural artist, Yinka Shonibare, grew up in Lagos Nigeria and London. From a privileged background, he explores issues of race and class from an African perspective. Many of his pieces include beautiful African-patterned fabrics, inspired by the Dutch wax prints made by Vlisco. To see more of his work visit the James Cohan Gallery in New York or the Stephen Friedman Gallery in the West End of London..
