Inspiration: Fritz Scholder
I met Fritz Scholder years ago at a dinner in Taos, New Mexico when I was a young twenty-something. I had met an art collector, an older man from Texas, and he invited me to a private dinner party. And I happened to sit next to Fritz Scholder and his wife. I wish I had been able to buy some of his paintings back then. I love the power of Scholder's work, his mythic figures. Even his flowers are powerful. The land in the West--especially Northern New Mexico--is so masculine, expansive, and dynamic, and he really captured this in his work. I was sad to find out that he died in 2005, way too young. What a cool guy.
