The Painter from Shanghai--A True Story

Self Portrait of Pan Yuliang

I just finished reading The Painter from Shanghai, a novel by Jennifer Cody Epstein based upon the life of the Chinese woman painter, Pan Yuliang. At the age of fourteen, Yuliang was sold to a brothel by her opium-addicted uncle. A customs official bought her out of the brothel and eventually married her. She studied art in Shanghai and in Paris, and was known for her self portraits and nudes. I was curious about her paintings, and here are two examples.
