Known as the dark, moody Bohemian of Paris, Livorno-born Amedeo Modigliani (1884 - 1920) was the quintessential penniless bad boy artist genius. But in spite of ill health, abuse of alcohol, drugs, and bad behavior, he produced masterworks. Tragic lover and muse, Jeanne Huberterne, died by walking backwards out a fifth floor window less than 48 hours after Modigliani's death. I saw a show of his works at LACMA and was knocked out by their force and strange beauty--
