Born today--Henry Moore (1898 - 1986), iconic British sculptor / painter known for his bronze semi-abstract monumental sculptures. Less known, he was regarded by some (from the Feb. 18, 2010 Telegraph article) to be a "contentious, avant-garde figure, preoccupied with sex and death,,,and virtually a Communist." Hmmn. In his own words, "The secret to lifeis to have a task, something you devote your entire life to, something you bring everything to, every minute of the day for the rest of your life. And the most important thing is, it must be something you cannot possibly do." Happy birthday Henry Moore--

Georges Braque (1882 - 1963) --major 20th-century French painter / sculptor who along with Picasso developed Cubism. After the death of Matisse in 1954, Braque came to be seen as France's greatest living painter. "Reality only reveals itself when it's illuminsted by a ray of poetry."--well said Georges Braque.

In 1955 Picasso bought a grand 19th-century villa in the hills just outside Cannes called "La Californie" whom he shared with his newest mistress and muse, Jacqueline--and a Dachshund named "Lump." At his death in 1973 at the age of 92, the villa was overflowing with thousands of finished and unfinished works, many still warehoused.
